Biography

Dr. Stephen Randall served as Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences (1994-2006), director of the Institute for US Policy Research; director Latin American Research Centre. He is an elected life time member of the Royal Society of Canada.

Randall held previous appointments at McGill University (1974-1989) and the University of Toronto (1971-1974).  Randall is a Fulbright scholar (2007). He was a member of the editorial board of the Latin American Research Review (2004-2009), and was co-editor of International Journal of the Canadian Institute for International Affairs.  He was awarded the National Order of Merit, Grand Cross (2000), and the Order of San Carlos (2013) from the Foreign Ministry of Colombia. In 2012 he received the Lifetime Public Service Award from the Canadian Council for the Americas (Toronto).  Randall has served with the United Nations, Organization of American States and Carter Center in international election supervision in the Caribbean, Latin America and Southeast Asia.  He is the author of more than a dozen books, among them: North America Without Borders (ed with Herman Konrad)1992);  Federalism and the New World Order: The Gorbachev Symposium (1993); The Diplomacy of Modernization: Colombia and the United States (1977); United States Foreign Oil Policy: For Profits and Security (1984); Aliados y Distantes: Colombia y los Estados Unidos (1994); Ambivalent Allies: Canada and the United States (4th edition 2008); An International History of the Caribbean Basin (with G.S. Mount) (1997), most recently, the authorized biography of Alfonso López Michelsen, President of Colombia (1974-1978).
