Biography

Paulina was born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana, but hails from the Upper East Region of Ghana. She attended K.N.U.S.T Junior High School and K.N.U.S.T Senior High School before proceeding to the University of Cape Coast, where she studied Education in French and English. In 2012, she began her career as a teaching assistant and communications instructor in English at the University of Cape Coast. The following year, she took on the role of French instructor at Gbewaa College of Education, a position she still holds. While teaching, Paulina pursued further studies, enrolling in a master's program in Burkina Faso, where she earned an MPhil in Sociolinguistics (French). Additionally, she has a Bachelor of Education in IT and Management, which complements her language skills.

Driven by a desire to continue in academia and maintain her status as an instructor, Paulina enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Calgary, School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures. This decision was influenced by two key figures in her academic journey, Dr. Michael Kudi, an alumnus of University of Calgary and Professor Selorm Gbanou, a lecturer at the University of Calgary. She is grateful to the University of Calgary, SLLLC and LLAC for the funding, grants, sessional opportunities, as well as support received as a doctoral student.

Paulina speaks English, French, Twi, Frafra, Fante, Hausa, and Kusaal. Her favorite novels include the Harry Potter series, books from Mills and Boon, and the Pokémon series. She is also inspired by William Labov's work on language dynamics and social hierarchy.

Paulina believes everyone is capable, and the only difference between those who succeed and those who don't is the effort put in, hence the need to encourage others to aspire to greatness.

Paulina believes that sharing her life experiences, whether academic or personal, can help make the world a better place by preventing others from repeating avoidable mistakes. To her, experience is not only the best teacher, but knowledge acquired from people's experience can be beneficial. She enjoys swimming, playing soccer, badminton, gardening, and offering counseling services.

Projects

Language planning

I am currently interested in language planning and will love to explore the languages spoken in Africa, specifically in Ghana. I am also intrigued by the struggles faced by learners of French as a second language and how they navigate and overcome these challenges.
