Biography

Mahdi Kiaee is a PhD Candidate in Business Technology Management at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. His research examines competition and welfare in digital platforms, with particular focus on interoperability vs. data portability, data sharing under information asymmetry, and the broader effects of technological change on innovation and R&D labor. His work utilizes analytical modeling and empirical/causal inference approaches.

Mahdi also teaches in BTMA, contributing to lecture and assessment development and delivering instruction that bridges hands-on analytics—including Power BI, data modeling, DAX, and API-enabled workflows—with managerial technology topics through case studies and in-class workshops. Before starting his PhD, he worked in industry across business analytics, ERP implementation (SAP CO), and financial modeling in the telecommunications sector. He holds an MSc in IT Management (Business Intelligence) and a BSc in Financial Management from the University of Tehran, and has a peer-reviewed publication on predictive analytics for ERP performance.
