Biography
Kimberly Shapkin is an Associate Professor (Teaching) and a PhD-prepared Nurse Practitioner with over 30 years of clinical and academic experience. She is recognized for her leadership in graduate nursing education, advanced practice nursing, and the development of innovative, evidence-informed approaches to teaching and learning.
Dr. Shapkin is the Team Lead and architect of the Professional Practice Entrepreneurship Graduate Nursing Certificate, one of the first programs of its kind in Canada, designed to prepare nurses and nurse practitioners to lead healthcare innovation and develop sustainable models of care. She also serves as a clinician and leader within the Faculty of Nursing NP-Led Mental Health and Wellness Clinic, where she advances student and faculty wellness through integrative, person-centered care.
Her clinical and scholarly interests focus on women's brain health, mental fitness, and metabolic wellness across the lifespan. She is certified in Gerontology by the Canadian Nurses Association (GNC[c]) and holds designation as a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP).
Research
Areas of Research
Kimberly’s research has examined healthcare professionals' treatment decision making affecting people living with neurocognitive disorders and comorbid conditions. She has sought to understand how these experiences influence care relationships, decision-making, and health outcomes. She applies a systems-oriented and relational lens to explore how healthcare professionals, caregivers, and communities can work together to enable people to thrive.
Her current areas of scholarly interest spans intersecting domains. First, she is advancing knowledge in women's brain health, exploring how midlife hormonal transitions, cognitive change, and metabolic health intersect to affect mental fitness, resilience, and vitality across the lifespan. Second, she is committed to advancing innovation in nursing education and care delivery through entrepreneurship, with a focus on values-driven, community-responsive models that position nurses as system leaders and architects of sustainable healthcare solutions.
