Biography

Dr. Waseem Shaukat is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary, working with Dr. Herman W. Barkema. His research focuses on veterinary epidemiology, infectious disease surveillance, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), genomic epidemiology, and One Health.

He completed his PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Calgary, where he investigated the epidemiology of endemic infectious diseases in Alberta dairy herds and of global AMR in human enteric pathogens. Through Alberta's Cattle Health Surveillance System (CHeSS), his research integrated epidemiology, diagnostics, and quantitative methods to strengthen disease surveillance, improve dairy herd health, and inform disease control strategies. His doctoral research also synthesized global evidence on AMR prevalence and trends in non-typhoidal Salmonella and Shigella causing human gastroenteritis through a systematic review and meta-analysis of the peer-reviewed literature.

His current research builds on his expertise in epidemiology, surveillance, and One Health approaches, with a focus on generating evidence to support integrated surveillance and informed decision-making across animal, human, and environmental health.

Before pursuing his PhD, Dr. Shaukat spent more than 12 years in Pakistan's livestock and dairy sectors, working across both commercial and development domains. He held leadership roles in dairy development, livestock business management, project implementation, and industry engagement, with responsibilities spanning herd health, farm economics, genetics, calf rearing, animal nutrition, hygiene, and producer extension. He worked closely with dairy producers, industry partners, researchers, and government agencies to develop practical, evidence-based solutions that improved livestock productivity and sustainability.

He continues to contribute to livestock research and development through national-level advisory and governance roles, including serving on the National Steering Committee of Pakistan's National Centre for Livestock Breeding, Genetics & Genomics and the ORIC Steering Committee at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. This combination of industry leadership and academic training continues to shape his research, with a strong emphasis on translating scientific evidence into practical solutions for animal and public health.
