Biography

Dr. Waseem Shaukat is a veterinary epidemiologist and dairy development professional currently serving as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary. His research interests include infectious disease surveillance, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), genomic epidemiology, and One Health.

He completed his PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Calgary, where his research addressed endemic infectious diseases in Alberta dairy herds and global AMR in human enteric pathogens. Through Alberta’s Cattle Health Surveillance System (CHeSS), his doctoral research integrated epidemiology, diagnostics, and quantitative methods to strengthen disease surveillance, improve dairy herd health, and inform disease control strategies. He also conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizing global evidence on AMR prevalence and trends in non-typhoidal Salmonella and Shigella associated with human gastroenteritis.

His current research focuses on AMR within a One Health framework, with an emphasis on integrating genomic and surveillance data across human, animal, and environmental sectors. His work aims to identify gaps in existing AMR and antimicrobial use surveillance systems and advance integrated approaches to understanding AMR transmission, strengthening surveillance, and supporting evidence-informed decision-making across sectors.

Before pursuing his PhD, Dr. Shaukat spent more than 12 years (2009–2021) working across Pakistan’s livestock and dairy sectors in commercial and development settings. He held leadership roles in dairy development, livestock business management, project implementation, and industry engagement, working closely with dairy producers, industry partners, researchers, and government agencies. His experience spans herd health, production systems, genetics, animal nutrition, producer extension, and livestock sustainability, and has provided him with a practical perspective on developing and implementing evidence-based approaches to improving livestock health and productivity.

Dr. Shaukat currently serves on the National Steering Committee of Pakistan’s National Centre for Livestock Breeding, Genetics & Genomics, and on the ORIC Steering Committee at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. He has also served on the Research Advisory Committee of the Livestock & Dairy Development Department of the Government of Punjab, Pakistan. His combination of academic training, research experience, and more than a decade of industry leadership continues to shape his work, with a strong emphasis on connecting scientific evidence, surveillance, and practical implementation to advance animal and public health.
