Dr. Trafford Crump

Biography

Dr. Trafford Crump is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with appointments in the Departments of Surgery and Community Health Sciences (Cumming School of Medicine) and the Department of Electrical & Software Engineering (Schulich School of Engineering) at the University of Calgary. He co-leads Ocular Oncology Outcomes Research (O3R), an interdisciplinary group that develops AI diagnostic tools, patient-reported outcome instruments, and real-world evidence infrastructure.

His research sits between software development and clinical evidence generation. Current work includes an AI pipeline that identifies choroidal nevi in fundus images already taken as part of routine care; PROM-UM, a patient-reported outcome measure for uveal melanoma; and the Alberta Ocular Brachytherapy Program's clinical registry and biorepository.

He holds a PhD in Evaluative Clinical Sciences from Dartmouth College. He is Affiliate Faculty at the University of British Columbia's Centre for Health Services and Policy Research.

He supervises graduate students in both Medicine and Engineering and welcomes inquiries from prospective trainees interested in health outcomes measurement, clinical AI validation, or real-world evidence methods.
