Background

Biography

Dr. Tiffany Boulton is an Associate Professor (Teaching) in the Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies program in the Department of Community Health Sciences. She is also the Graduate Student-Supervisor Advisor for CHS. Tiffany has a PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from the University of Leeds (UK) and her background is in Disability Studies and the Sociology of Health and Illness. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender and health, with a specific interest in the areas of invisible disabilities, mental health, and maternity care. Her research is informed by Critical Disability and Feminist theories, and she uses qualitative and participatory research methods, working in partnership with communities to identify and address the structural barriers marginalized people experience in the healthcare system, when accessing mental health and disability services, and in education and workplace settings. Tiffany is also a trained birth and postpartum doula and the co-founder of the Radical Mental Health Doula (RMHD) program, which is a social innovation project aimed at creating a new type of doula to support people with mental health challenges. Alongside this, one of her ongoing projects over the past decade examines the roles of midwives and doulas in maternity care.
