Biography

Dr. Søren Boysen obtained his DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (University of Saskatchewan) in 1996, completed a small animal internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College, and a residency in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) at Tufts University, becoming a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) in 2003. He is the former Chief of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Montreal, where he helped establish veterinary ECC as a recognized specialty through the development of a successful small animal residency program and contributed to the development of the undergraduate ECC curriculum. He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Calgary, where he was an original contributor to the development of the undergraduate Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum and continues to play a major role in ECC education.

Dr. Boysen is internationally recognized as a pioneer in veterinary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). He co-developed the original small animal FAST examination, helping introduce POCUS into the veterinary profession, and has since played a leading role in expanding its applications through the development of abdominal, pleural, lung, and cardiovascular POCUS protocols. He is a founding member and Education Chair of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care UltraSound (VECCUS) working group, co-leads the international veterinary POCUS consensus statement initiative, and serves as a co-lead on the POCUS in CPR RECOVER project, helping establish evidence-based standards for POCUS education and clinical practice worldwide.

With more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, co-editorship of multiple textbooks, and numerous teaching, research, and speaker excellence awards, Dr. Boysen is a highly sought-after international lecturer who has taught in more than 30 countries. His contributions to veterinary POCUS have been recognized with the 2023 Jack Mara Scientific Achievement Award and the 2025 Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Small Animal Practitioner Award.

At the University of Calgary, Dr. Boysen teaches throughout the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum and is passionate about clinical education, curriculum development, and mentoring students, interns, residents, and practicing veterinarians. His research interests include point-of-care ultrasound, resuscitation, hemorrhage, coagulation, perfusion, and veterinary education. Through his clinical work, research, and international collaborations, he continues to advance veterinary ECC while working toward making POCUS a Day 1 competency for every veterinary graduate.

Dr. Boysen’s research is focused in 2 major areas:

  1. Clinical research, particularly regarding emergency point-of-care ultrasound, lactate and alternative routes of IV access.
  2. His second major research focus is the management of hemorrhagic shock, perfusion and coagulation.
