Biography

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Calgary working within a Canada Excellence Research Chair program that centers Indigenous Knowledge Systems in addressing the climate and water crisis.

My current work focuses on how societies can move beyond managing nature as a resource and instead rebuild respectful relationships with land and water. The research explores water justice, land stewardship, forestry practices, and climate resilience through Indigenous-led and community-based approaches. I am particularly interested in how research can support Earth-based reconciliation and contribute to policy and practice that advances well-being for both people and the environment.

Previously, I was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Arctic Institute of North America, where I worked on the Arctic Genomics Project on biodiversity co-management and Indigenous food security. My role focused on knowledge mobilization, ensuring research did not remain in academic journals but could be understood and used by communities, decision-makers, and conservation practitioners. I helped connect genomic and DNA-based tools with real conservation decisions supporting ecosystems and Indigenous livelihoods.

Trained as a conservation biologist, I began with conventional field-based methods and now combine them with genomics and transdisciplinary approaches. Across both roles, my work has a consistent goal: building bridges between research, Indigenous knowledge, and policy so environmental action is collaborative, practical, and community-grounded.

Projects

Indigenous Ways of Climate and Water Sustainability for Planetary Health and Well-being

The project centers Indigenous Knowledge Systems in responding to the climate and water crisis.

Rather than treating climate change only as an environmental issue, the research understands it as part of a larger planetary health crisis, one rooted in broken relationships between people and the Earth. The work asks an important question: what does it actually mean to live well with the Earth?

The research focuses on interconnected areas including water justice, land stewardship, forestry practices, and climate resilience. Across these themes, the goal is to move away from viewing land and water as resources to be managed, and instead understand them as living relations with rights and responsibilities attached to them.
