Biography
Sardar Muhammad Ali is the President of the Schulich School of Engineering Graduate Students' Council (SSE-GSC) at the University of Calgary. He is currently pursuing an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Engineering and holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He initially joined the University of Calgary as an M.Eng. student in Electrical and Computer Engineering before being offered the opportunity to transition to a research-based M.Sc., reflecting his growing interdisciplinary focus on engineering, environmental research, and intelligent sensing technologies.
His research focuses on applying artificial intelligence to environmental sensing and greenhouse gas monitoring using low-cost sensor technologies. His work brings together his background in electrical engineering, sensing and data analysis with environmental and mechanical engineering applications.
Ali is a recipient of the Wade Gieni Leadership Scholarship, the Emerging Leader Award presented at the 2026 GSA Awards Gala, and the Best Paper Award at the 2025 Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering Graduate Conference. He has authored multiple IEEE conference publications and presented his research at the 2026 CPANS Conference & AGM hosted by the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) in Texas.
Beyond his research, Ali is actively involved in graduate student leadership at the Schulich School of Engineering. He was invited by the Dean to serve on the Steering Committee for Schulich's next Strategic Plan, contributing to discussions shaping the future direction of the School. He is passionate about engineering innovation, sustainability, interdisciplinary research, and supporting the graduate student community.
