Biography

Sané received a BSc in Psychology and Biology (Hons), with a minor in mathematics, from the University of Victoria and an MSc in Neuroscience from the University of Calgary. During her MSc, she worked on a clinical trial investigating the application of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment for patients with persisting symptoms after concussion (PSaC). She also examined how functional near-infrared spectroscopy can be used to characterize functional connectivity in patients with PSaC and to assess response to rTMS treatment. Her PhD work will focus on cerebrovascular reactivity and other MRI-based outcomes after Traumatic Brain Injury. Outside of her studies, Sané loves spending time in nature, whether it’s hiking and camping in the Canadian Rockies or relaxing in her own backyard.

Projects

Developing a rapid objective functional MRI assessment and report to characterize functional abilities and predict persistent symptoms following traumatic brain injury

Routine brain imaging, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), is not always sensitive to the changes after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This can make it difficult for clinicians to link symptoms to injury and, in turn, creates challenges for patients seeking appropriate treatment or compensation. This project aims to develop a comprehensive MRI-based assessment and reporting system that combines multiple MRI methods. One of these methods includes a brief, safe carbon dioxide breathing challenge to assess how well blood vessels in the brain regulate blood flow when needed. The resulting data will be used to generate a neuroimaging report designed to help link brain changes with functional outcomes and recovery trajectory after TBI.
