Funding

I'm working on two projects: 1) free convection with phase change to design a solar thermal water boiler and 2) three-dimensional bicycle dynamics to design a self-driving motorcycle.

Areas of Research

Theoretical mechanics, engineering design, motorcycle/bicycle dynamics, free convection with phase change

Projects

Bicycle 3D Dynamics (2025-2027)

I currently co-supervise a Masters student who studies experimentally bicycle 3D dynamics using accelerometers and gyroscopes. I am developing a two-wheel 3D dynamical model based on my 2021 CSME conference publication on unicycle 3D dynamics. We want to study the relationship among yaw, roll, and spin angles of bicycle. We are interested in learning how to self-drive a motorcycle.

Solar Thermal Water Boiler (2023 - 2028)

I have been working on a design of solar thermal water boiler since 2023. This has led me to mathematically model natural convection heat transfer with phase change in 2024. Other potential applications include food drying and interior space heating.

Fundamentals of Engineering Materials Lecture Package (2025)

I am writing lecture notes on Fundamentals of Engineering Materials, a first-year engineering course. It is based on my third-year materials engineering course notes and additional materials I have on materials science (condensed-matter physics), basic chemistry, and engineering applications. I am using this writing project to highlight different engineering applications of materials. Writing lecture notes for courses I teach is my passion. If you have an engineering application idea for my lecture notes, you can email me at rbudiman@ucalgary.ca.
