Background

Biography

Dr. Trafford Crump is an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) with appointments in the Department of Surgery (Cumming School of Medicine) and the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering (Schulich School of Engineering) at the University of Calgary. He leads the Translational Outcomes Research Lab (TORL), an interdisciplinary group that develops clinically validated AI diagnostic tools, patient-reported outcome instruments, and real-world evidence infrastructure.

Dr. Crump's research program bridges software development and clinical evidence generation. Current projects include NeviSight, an ML-based diagnostic classifier for choroidal melanoma developed in collaboration with ophthalmology and engineering; the PROM-UM, a patient-reported outcome measure for uveal melanoma; and the Alberta Ocular Brachytherapy Program's clinical registry and biorepository.

Dr. Crump holds a PhD in Evaluative Clinical Sciences from Dartmouth College. He is an Affiliate Faculty member at the University of British Columbia's Centre for Health Services and Policy Research.

He supervises graduate students in both Medicine and Engineering and welcomes inquiries from prospective trainees interested in health outcomes measurement, clinical AI validation, or real-world evidence methods.
