Areas of Research

The Geophysics of the Built Environment

The built environment - cities, inter-city infrastructure, hinterland assets and communities - needs protection from deliberate harm and from natural disasters; wind and water turbines need to be sited correctly, and historical built environments must be found, studied, and protected with minimal disturbance. Further, the built environment is either coupled to, or is embedded in, Earth's near surface where geophysical fields like sound, seismic waves, electromagnetic waves, gravity, and conductivity penetrate easily for geophysicists to measure, process, image, interpret, and issue recommendations. My interest is advancing geophysical systems and techniques for solving built environment problems as diverse as pedestrian safety, glacial melting, and protecting our ancient monuments.
