Background

Biography

Dr. Chang is a semi-retired finance professor who continues to teach an experiential learning course, Portfolio Theory and Management. In this simulation course, up to 20 groups of students each receive $1 million to construct, manage, and protect an investment fund based on real stock market data.

In the community, Dr. Chang volunteers with the non-profit faith-based Wing Kei Senior Home Association, which operates 320 beds across three buildings and one campus, supported and supervised by Alberta Health Services. He served on its board from 2014 to 2024 and is currently on its fund development committee for a $85 million 180-bed new building. Previously, he also served on the boards of Calgary Economic Development and the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.

Dr. Chang has held several academic positions, including Associate Dean (International), Director of the Centre for International Management, and Area Chair of Finance and Operations Management. He has taught at the business schools of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Peking University, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), and National Chengchi University in Taipei. He has received numerous teaching awards at the University of Illinois and the University of Calgary, including the UofC Students' Union Teaching Excellence Award and the University of Calgary President’s Internationalization Achievement Award.

Dr. Chang's research interests include corporate finance and investments. Courses he has taught include Introductory and Advanced Statistics, Financial Management, Corporate Finance, Corporate Risk Management, Capital Budgeting, Investments, and Portfolio Management.
