Projects
Situated as a cultural heritage conservator, my research proposal focuses on developing a framework for best practices for cultural heritage preservation projects in Mexico. Professional conservation projects in Mexico are authorized through the Ministry of Culture and often focus on preserving the materiality of the objects. As owners or custodians of particular objects or structures, communities also play an essential role in preserving and conserving material culture. However, the different ways in which objects can be understood and their significance in a community do not always have to do with the tangibility of the heritage. This project will target the indigenous community of Francisco Sarabia in Chiapas, where the meaning and importance of Catholic religious heritage gets intertwined with the archaeological Maya site of Tenam Puente. By establishing a horizontal form of collaboration between conservation professionals and the community of Francisco Sarabia, I will endorse the capacity of the latter to contribute to the processes of heritage management and decision-making in the practice of conservation of cultural patrimony and, ultimately, to the building of knowledge in heritage matters.
