Toward Restorative Housing for Children: An Equity-Focused and Co-Designed Multi-Level Action Plan

A supportive home environment is fundamental to children’s well-being, yet persistent housing inequities mean that many children from low-income families experience housing conditions that may not adequately support their physical, emotional, and developmental needs. While housing is often approached in terms of affordability and basic provision, less attention has been given to how the quality and design of the home environment shape children’s everyday experiences and well-being.

My doctoral research examines the relationship between housing conditions and children’s affective well-being, with particular attention to children living in communities experiencing socioeconomic inequities. Building on the Restorative Home Model, the research investigates how housing can not only protect children from harm, but also provide supportive everyday environments and promote positive experiences and well-being.

Central to the research is the recognition of children as active participants with valuable knowledge about the environments in which they live. Through child-centred research and co-design, the study brings children’s perspectives into conversations about housing quality and improvement. Ultimately, the research aims to translate these insights into an equity-focused and co-designed multi-level action plan, identifying opportunities for change across design and practice, community and organizational action, and broader housing policy. In doing so, the research seeks to advance a more restorative approach to housing—one that moves beyond shelter toward environments that actively support children’s well-being and quality of life.
