Biography
I received my Ph.D. in Latin American Literatures and Cinemas from the University of Kansas in 2004, but I joined the University of Calgary in 2001. In my research, I focus on twentieth—and twenty-first-century Literatures of Latin America, with an emphasis on genre, gender, social space, and biopolitics, and on cinemas through the lens of transnationalism, extractivism, and sound.
In my book Sujetos Transnacionales: la negociación en cine y literatura (2008), I analyze the ways in which upper-class women from diverse ethnicities and levels of experience negotiate with the restrictions of their narratological, social, economic, and political environments.
My edited book, Latin American Cinemas: Local Views and Transnational Connections (2011), presents case studies of the most important Latin American cinemas of the twentieth century and their films to delve into the meanings of transnationalism. Most notably, the book offers insights into renovated cinematic visions and alertness to citizens' everyday experiences that help connect the contemporary cinemas of Latin America even more closely to social and cultural concerns.
My current work includes papers on “Dystopia in Latin American Cinemas,” Netflix's impact on Latin American cinema production, and a manuscript on “Gender and Genre in Latin American Cinemas.”
