Biography
Mung Ting Chung is currently Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Calgary, where she previously served as Assistant Professor (Teaching) and Instructor (2019–2024). Her research interests include Hong Kong literature, Sinophone studies, and the cultural Cold War.
Since joining the University of Calgary in 2019, she has taught over 30 courses across 11 distinct topics, including all levels of Mandarin language instruction, as well as content-based courses in Chinese and Sinophone literature, history, and cultural studies.
She has presented her work internationally at conferences and institutions in North America, East Asia, and Europe, including the University of Zurich, Academia Sinica, and the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), among others. She has also been invited to give talks at Fu Jen Catholic University and National Tsing Hua University. Her scholarship has been published in both English and Chinese.
She is co-editor, with Andrea Riemenschnitter and Kiu-wai Chu, of the forthcoming volume Coming of Age in Chinese Literature and Cinema: Sinophone Variations of the Bildungsroman (Amsterdam University Press, June 2025): https://www.aup.nl/en/book/9789463720793/coming-of-age-in-chinese-literature-and-cinema
She has recently completed her first monograph, Writing Beyond Borders: Hong Kong Literary Production in the Early Cold War Era (tentative title), and it is under contract with Brill.
Beyond academia, she has a longstanding commitment to community engagement. From 2017 to 2020, she served as a translator for Fête Chinoise magazine and later joined its editorial board, fostering cultural connections within the Chinese Canadian community. After relocating to Calgary, she has continued to serve the community through initiatives such as hosting book clubs for local Calgarians and giving public talks on Hong Kong culture. These activities reflect her broader dedication to promoting inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding, both within and beyond the university.
