Areas of Research
A critical gap exists in our knowledge of rare but severe, burn-like skin reactions in children called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Right now, when children come into the hospital with these problems, we use what we know from the adult literature to diagnose and treat them.
I lead a collaborative research group within the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance with the goals of:
(1) creating pediatric-specific criteria for the SJS/TEN spectrum
(2) performing a systematic review of pediatric SJS/TEN
(2) coordinating a retrospective cohort study of SJS/TEN patients from across North America to determine optimal management
On the other hand, my other research interest, eczema, aka atopic dermatitis, is a very common skin problem. It has a significant impact on patients' and families' quality of life because it is so chronically itchy. Basic treatment measures are recommended to all patients regardless of severity. My colleagues at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and I have been working on an Eczema Action Plan to facilitate effective, coordinated care of eczema by patients, doctors, and pharmacists.
