Biography

Melissa Eastveld is an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in the Faculty of Nursing and PhD student in Transdisciplinay Research in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Melissa is a citizen of the Otipemisiwak Métis Nation (districts 5 and 6) with reinstated Treaty status registered with Peguis First Nation. Melissa was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and comes from a large family of maternal Anishinaabe/Cree/Red River Métis/Icelandic and paternal German Mennonite relatives on Treaty 1 traditional territory.

Melissa’s nursing career has centered in perinatal women's health with special interest in the intersections of relationality, mental health, and substance use. These experiences ground her doctoral Métis mothers experiences within Perinatal Healthcare, using a Métis-specific methodologies. This work has been recognized by several national, provincial, and local awards including the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) CGS-D/doctoral fellowship (2023), One Child Every Child Indigenous Seed Funding Grant (2025), Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES)- Indigenous (2024/2025), Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES)- Indigenous Research (2023), ii’ taa'poh'to'p Graduate Scholarship (2025/2026), and the Indigenous Graduate Métis Scholars Award (2023).
