Biography
Malcolm Munro is a Professor Emeritus, University of Calgary. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours Marketing) from the University of Saskatchewan, and MS and PhD degrees in Management Information Systems (MIS) from the University of Minnesota. Malcolm began his academic career with the Faculty of Management, now the Haskayne School of Business, at the University of Calgary in 1974. He established one of the first MIS programs in Canada, and served as MIS Area Chair at various times throughout the 1980s, and as Chair of the Scurfield Hall Building Committee 1982-87. During most of the 1990s, he served variously as Associate Dean (Research), Associate Dean (Planning and Development) and inaugural Director of the PhD program. From 2000 through 2006 Malcolm served as VP (Meetings and Conferences) of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), the principal association of the international information systems academic community. In 2007, he was inducted as a Fellow of the AIS for “outstanding contributions to the Information Systems discipline in research, teaching and service”. He retired from the University of Calgary in September 2007.
Other activities are as follows. Tenure and promotion reviewer for 22 universities in Canada, United States, Hong Kong and Israel; ten research grants from NSERC and SSHRC; associate editor of Data Base; associate editor of INFOR: the Canadian Journal of information processing and operational research; Departmental Editor of Information Systems for the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences; Guest Editor of a Special Issue of INFOR on End-User Computing; Editorial Board of Technology and Innovations (DeGruyter Publishers); and for about 15 years editor (and founder) of MIS Interrupt, an international newsletter. Program Co-chair of the International Conference on Information Systems, Vancouver 1994.
In the years immediately prior and subsequent to his retirement, Malcolm’s research interests focused on the intersection of information technology governance and corporate strategy resulting in a number of articles in professional journals, eight Ivey published cases, and the case WestJet Airlines, winner of Ivey Publishing Classics Award (2022) as a best seller for five years. His collaborators in these efforts were Dr. P Michael Maher (retired), former Dean of the Haskayne School and professor of strategy and general management, and Dr. Sid Huff, then holder of the Ericsson Chair in information technology and Head of School, Victoria University, Wellington New Zealand.
