Biography
Mahrukh Tanweer is an MD/MSc student currently completing her Master of Science in the Clinical Neurosciences program and a part of the Leaders in Medicine Program at the University of Calgary. She is a member of the Brain NeuroRehabilitation Lab, where her research focuses on predicting growth hormone deficiency in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Mahrukh has been involved in multiple projects ranging from injury prevention in youth athletes to qualitative work on social participation in physical activity among Pakistani older adults, and the development of novel tools to improve medical education on mobility aids. She has also contributed to concussion research through her work with high school athletes as part of the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre.
She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Kinesiology from the University of Calgary, where she developed a strong foundation in movement science, rehabilitation, and equity-oriented care. Her diverse research experiences sparked a deeper interest in neuroscience and ultimately led her to pursue a Master of Science. Upon completing her MSc, Mahrukh will begin medical school at the University of Calgary, where she hopes to continue integrating research, advocacy, and clinical care to serve diverse patient populations.
Projects
This project aims to predict growth hormone deficiency in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) by assessing the use of the Quality of Life in Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency Assessment questionnaire and relevant clinical variables. By identifying those at risk earlier in their recovery, the study hopes to improve long-term outcomes through timely hormonal screening and intervention following brain injury. The research will involve data collection from TBI patients in a clinical setting, with a focus on cognitive testing and patient-reported outcomes.
Awards
