As a paediatric registered nurse, Dr. MacKay is passionate about improving care provided to hospitalized infants/children and their families. Parents of medically fragile infants and children with medical complexity experience significant stress during lengthy hospital admissions that negatively impacts their mental health. This results in disorganized parent-nurse relationships and suboptimal parent-infant/child relationships  that can lead to poor health outcomes for such infants/children. Dr. MacKay is engaging in various clinical research projects to develop new and novel models of care provided to infants/children geared at improving nurse-patient/family relationships and infant/child-parent experiences of care. As well, Dr. MacKay is keen to develop new and novel interventions that can be utilized within the hospital setting by healthcare professionals that improve parent-infant/child relationships, which can buffer at risk infants/children from the already harmful effects of toxic stress produced by lengthy hospitalizations.
