Biography
After an undergraduate degree in Belgium, Professor Bauwens did an MASc at the University of British Columbia in 1986 and a PhD at the University of California at Berkeley in 1989, both in mechanical engineering. He has been at the University of Calgary since 1992 and was promoted to professor in 1999. From 2013 to 2017, he served as the president of the Institute for the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems.
Research
Areas of Research
Analysis and computational fluid dynamics applied to combustion and reacting flows. Detonations, combustion instabilities, reactive acoustics, combustion in porous media. Numerical simulation of two- and three-dimensional detonations. Deflagration-to-detonation transition, ignition and hot spot formation are being studied using techniques such as high activation energy asymptotics.
Similar issues as above but applied to high speed propulsion
Pulse-tube refrigerators, thermoacoustics, and more generally, pulsating flows in porous media with heat transfer and pressure oscillations. Analysis of oscillating flow with large pressure fluctuation with heat transfer in narrow flow passages, with extremities at different temperatures, with application to thermoacoustic and Stirling engines and refrigerators.
