Areas of Research

Activities:

My research has spanned a large variety of mental health and substance use topics over the last decade.

My undergrad and PhD work focused on analytical chemistry. The focus of my dissertation was the analysis of metabolism by CYP P450 enzymes on potential neuroprotective substances. My work really focused on neurochemicals and brain function in psychiatry.

Following completion of my PhD, I moved into clinical research, designing and managing multiple national Health Canada approved double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical studies. This work, combined with several years on the HREB panel at the University of Alberta form the foundation of my expertise in Clinical Studies (RCT and others).

Since 2014, I have focused on health system and administrative data research in mental health and substance use. The administrative data research has included studies on the impact of cannabis legalization in Canada and the possibility of using administrative data to investigate treatment resistant depression. The health system research has included being a co-lead on the creation of Canadian Guidelines for Take Home Naloxone Community Programs, work to understand the experiences of First Nation Peoples in Alberta Emergency Rooms, and a project studying the impact of rooming in for parent/baby dyads where the baby was exposed to substances prior to birth.

My interest and focus currently is on using technology to create a system dynamic model of the substance use treatment system in Calgary. I will use administrative data to create the model, investigating how patients flow through the system. Then I will overlay information from people with lived/living experience in the system, working to determine the ‘why’ behind the patient flow along with outcomes. Ultimately, I want to examine marginalized groups and improve their experience and outcomes from the system.
