Learning opportunities

I am looking for students in the topics of systems analysis and decision support in the field of bioeconomy, renewable energies and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods.

Background

Educational Background

M.Sc. Environmental Engineering, University of Miskolc, Hungary,

Ph.D. University of Leoben, Austria,

Biography

Nora Szarka has over 20 years of experience in the fields of decision support, strategic biomass use and regional development. She is an environmental engineer from the University of Miskolc in Hungary, earning later her Ph.D. from the University of Leoben in Austria.
From 2001 to 2007 she worked as a researcher at the University of Leoben, focusing on renewable energy concepts. Following this, she expanded her international experience by working as a project engineer at the University of Concepción in Chile from 2007 to 2010, where she contributed to the fields of environmental and energy research.
Between 2011 and 2025 she led the working group "Biomass in the Energy System" at the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ). During her tenure at DBFZ she developed a portfolio of tools for strategic planning and decision-making for supporting the establishment of a sustainable bio-based economy and negative emission technologies, integrating interdisciplinary approaches such as scenario development or multicriteria decision analysis.
She is also active as a project evaluator and reviewer of scientific journals.
In May 2025 she joined the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary.
