Biography
Karyn received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. She started her career in the multisystem ICU at the University of Alberta hospital before moving to Calgary, Alberta, where she continued working as a ICU RN at the Trauma ICU and Cardiac Surgery ICU at the Foothills Medical Centre.
In 2002, she began work as a clinical trials RN coordinator with the Calgary Stroke Team. Here she completed the Endpoint Research Course and later the SOCRA course becoming Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) in 2005.
In 2011, Karyn began working as a research RN with Dr Eric Smith in the Vascular Cognitive Impairment group. Here she began to work in interventional and observational research with early onset Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Her role has primarily focused on the PROMPT registry study and with clinical trials. She began working in the Cognitive Neurosciences Clinic in Area 3 HCMC at the Foothills Medical Centre with the patients and their families, completing various cognitive tests while providing support to the patients and care partners. Her role also included teaching medical students and residents cognitive testing and training staff to do standardized testing at both the Foothills Medical Centre and South Heath Campus. In 2017, Karyn completed the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) Program, furthering her knowledge base. She currently is the Clinical Trials Research RN for clinical trials in Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Karyn also organizes the annual retreat with both sites, Dementia Neurological Imaging and PET rounds, and Dementia Academic Rounds.
When she is not working, you will find her enjoying time socializing with family and friends, travelling the world and enjoying life! Karyn has her International Sommelier Guild Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 1, and other interests include staying active, silversmithing, jewelry making, gardening and anything baking and cooking.
