Biography
Dr. Kannin Osei-Tutu is the inaugural Senior Associate Dean, Health Equity & Systems Transformation (HEST), and an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. A family physician and hospitalist, he leads faculty-wide work to advance health equity and systems transformation in partnership with patients, populations, and communities.
HEST brings together four complementary platforms: the Office of Faculty Development; the Precision Equity and Social Justice Office; the Health Equity & Systems Transformation Innovation Lab (HEST-IL); and the Office of Planetary Health. Dr. Osei-Tutu established HEST-IL in January 2025 and the Office of Planetary Health, which launched in September 2026. Together, these platforms build institutional capability; advance equity and social justice; develop, evaluate, and translate equity-centred innovations; and embed planetary health across education, research, healthcare, and broader systems transformation.
Dr. Osei-Tutu’s national leadership focuses on health equity in medical education, physician competency development, and accreditation. He serves on the CanMEDS 2026 Steering Committee and authored the CanMEDS 2026 Health Equity Primer. He previously co-chaired the CanMEDS 2025 Anti-Racism Expert Working Group and served as an appointee to the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools. He has also contributed to postgraduate medical education accreditation reform, including national efforts to strengthen safety in learning environments through accreditation standards and processes.
His work advances an action-oriented approach to physician competency and institutional accountability—one that moves beyond recognizing inequity toward addressing structural barriers in medical education, healthcare, and health systems.
Dr. Osei-Tutu is the inaugural Chair of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada’s Committee on Black Health, Innovation and Advancement. He previously served on the inaugural executive of Black Physicians of Canada and founded the Black Physicians’ Association of Alberta. Through leadership, scholarship, partnership, and accountability, his work advances more equitable medical education and health systems.
