Biography

Justin Burkett is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary and Council Chair of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), the statutory regulatory body overseeing approximately 50,000+ registered nurses and nurse practitioners across the province.

He holds a Master of Nursing and graduate certificates in Healthcare Innovation and Design and Leadership for Health Systems Transformation, and is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE).

At UCalgary, Justin's teaching spans theory, clinical practice, and simulation education. He teaches from first principles, designing for curiosity and deep inquiry. His scholarly work spans nursing education, simulation pedagogy, and the integration of emerging technologies into educational and healthcare settings. His current research, through PLaiD (Practice Lab for AI Discernment), is developing frameworks to support nursing educators in engaging artificial intelligence as discerning practitioners.

As Council Chair, he leads Council in its oversight of strategic direction, executive leadership, and organizational governance under Alberta's Health Professions Act, guided by the belief that effective regulation serves the public best when it also creates the conditions in which nurses can practice with confidence, clarity, and professional authority.
