Biography

Dr. Howlett graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1989, completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology studies at Dalhousie University and University of Toronto. He practiced Advanced Heart Failure at Dalhousie University and subsequently at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, where he remains as an Invasive, Advanced Heart Failure Cardiologist.

He has long been heavily involved in Clinical Practice Guideline generation and Knowledge Translation, in particular related to heart failure. He has served as a member or Chair of several national and international Guidelines Committees, Scientific Program Committees and clinical trial steering committees/research consortia and co-Chairs the Annual Canadian HF Update meeting. He publishes actively in the areas of chronic cardiovascular disease management, acute and chronic heart failure, end of life, and knowledge translation. Dr. Howlett is the founding and former President of the Canadian Heart Failure Society and has published over 150 peer-reviewed medical journal articles.  He is an Associate Editor of the Merck Manual.
