Biography

Dr. John D. McLennan completed his formal education at the Universities of Alberta, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and McMaster University. Through these opportunities, he obtained an MD, MPH, and PhD, as well as Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada fellowship certification in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. He is currently a clinical investigator and clinical associate professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Community Health Sciences at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He has had the opportunity to provide psychiatric care for a variety of ages, from preschoolers to adults. Currently he provides psychiatric consultation within the Calgary Eating Disorder Program focused on children with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

His main current research interests focus on examining population health patterns in low- and middle-income countries using national health survey data. Within such data he has been exploring parent discipline, drinking water, and infant feeding. This secondary data analysis work is complemented by qualitative and quantitative field research work in the Dominican Republic, most recently funded by a grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for a study on the measurement of parent disciplinary behaviour. McLennan is also the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
