Biography
Dr. John D. McLennan completed his formal education at the Universities of Alberta, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and McMaster University. Through these opportunities, he obtained an MD, MPH, and PhD, as well as Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada fellowship certification in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. He is currently a clinician investigator and clinical professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Community Health Sciences at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He has had the opportunity to provide psychiatric care for a variety of ages, from preschoolers to adults. Currently he provides psychiatric consultation within the Calgary Eating Disorder Program with a focus on the delivery of a behavioural treatment approach for children with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and related eating difficulties.
His current research interests focus mainly on examining population patterns in low- and middle-income countries using Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) data from UNICEF. There are two major foci within this work 1) epidemiology of parenting disciplinary behaviour, and 2) patterns within aspects of drinking water. Work on the latter is complemented by student projects in his undergraduate course MDSC 517 (Global Survey Analysis). The former is complemented by qualitative and quantitative field research work in the Dominican Republic, most recently funded by a grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for a study on the measurement of parent disciplinary behaviour.
