Biography
I am a senior instructor in the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, focusing on intersectional feminism, environmental issues, social change history, and community connections. My writing has been published in numerous places, including Beyond Memory: An Anthology of Contemporary Arab American Creative Nonfiction, Sajjilu Arab American: A Reader in SWANA Studies, and Arc Poetry Magazine. I regularly write for Mizna: Prose, Poetry, and Art Exploring Arab America.
I've edited the anthology Food For Our Grandmothers: Writings by Arab-American and Arab-Canadian Feminists (South End Press, 1994), and wrote Thinking Class: Sketches from a Cultural Worker (South End Press, 1996), as well as The Great Loss of the Twentieth Century (2023).
Joe lives, with gratitude, and with love of the land, in the territories of the people of Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy, (the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. I am committed to doing my part for Truth and Reconciliation, and for ecological justice.
