Biography

Jess is Faculty & Emeritus Professor of Finance and Family Business Governance at the University of Calgary; Distinguished Professor of Family Business at the University of Lancaster, Lancaster, UK; and, over the years, was consecutively the Fotile Chair Professor, Bao Yu Gang Chair Professor, and Qiushi Chair Professor at Zhejiang University, Zhejiang, CHINA.

Jess’s research publications include four books, three research monographs, and over 100 research papers on financial management and family business governance. He has been a senior adviser to an investment banking firm, an adviser to an international consulting company, a director of a professional association by ministerial appointment, and a director of Canadian public and private companies. For his contributions to management practice through his teaching, research, and consulting, he received the Leaders in Management Education Award from the Financial Post of Canada and, for his research, the University of Southern California Greif Center for Entrepreneurship Studies Research Impact Award; the Lifetime Influence and Impact Award from the Family Enterprise Research Conference, a global group of family business scholars; and has been recognized by Web of Science as one of the world’s most highly cited scholars in Economics and Business since 2017.
