Biography
Jasdeep (Jessie) Singh Chahal is a PhD student, political strategist, strategy consultant, and educator whose research focuses on political strategy, leadership development, and strategic judgment.
His doctoral research examines how leaders develop the capacity to think and act strategically under conditions of complexity, uncertainty, competing interests, and political constraint. He is particularly interested in the relationship between leadership development and strategic judgment, and what that relationship can reveal about the practice of political strategy. His broader research interests include strategy and strategy practice, political leadership, decision-making, power, and the development of leaders capable of exercising sound judgment in complex environments.
Jessie brings more than 20 years of experience across government, politics, business, consulting, international development, and academia to his research. He served in the Prime Minister’s Office as the lead adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for Western and Northern Canada and previously served as Trudeau’s principal adviser for Western Canada while he was Leader of the Opposition.
He has also held senior roles on major political campaigns, including serving as Campaign Manager for Naheed Nenshi’s Alberta NDP leadership campaign and Deputy Campaign Manager for Chrystia Freeland’s 2025 Liberal Party of Canada leadership campaign. He is the founder of consulting firms focused on political strategy, campaigns, government relations, and organizational strategy.
Since 2013, Jessie has taught university-level strategy at Simon Fraser University, Mount Royal University, and the University of Calgary. He holds an MSc in Public Management and Governance from the London School of Economics, an MBA in Strategy and International Business from Simon Fraser University, and a BSc from the University of Calgary.
His work is transdisciplinary, drawing on political science, strategy, leadership studies, organizational and systems thinking, design, integrative approaches, and practitioner knowledge. At its core, his doctoral work asks how leaders develop the judgment, discipline, adaptability, and ethical grounding required to lead strategically.
