Areas of Research
My research program focuses on providing a basic science approach to understanding mechanisms of sudden infant death, a leading cause of post neonatal mortality during the first year of life in North America. Currently, we are investigating various aspects of the maternal adaptation to pregnancy as well as the influence of fetal environment on the physiological responses of the neonate and infant to the "stressors" of everyday life (e.g., fever such as occurs following exposure to pyrogen, hypoxia such as occurs during sleep apnea and positional asphyxia, and "stress" such as occurs upon exposure to a novel environment).
