Biography
Dr. Jim Kellner is a pediatrician, clinical investigator and medical leader with extensive local and national experience related to child health, infectious diseases and research. He started his career as a pediatric emergency medicine specialist, and then became a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases. For more than 25 years, he has worked with colleagues from health service professions and basic sciences in epidemiologic research and clinical trials focused on vaccine preventable infections with a particular focus on Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. Dr. Kellner established two local research teams and is a member of several national and international research networks.
As a medical leader, Dr. Kellner was Chair/Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Calgary and Calgary Zone of Alberta Health Services from 2008 to 2018. During this decade, the department grew by 75% leading to very significant expansion of clinical, education and research services. As Chair/Chief, he served with national organizations related to child health, including the Paediatric Chairs of Canada (serving as President from 2013-2016), and the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Health Centres (now known as Children’s Healthcare Canada).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kellner was a member of the federal COVID-19 Immunity Task Force Leadership Group and was Co-Chair of the CITF’s Field Studies Working Party and Lead of the Pediatric Network. As an investigator, he led or participated in numerous local and national clinical and epidemiologic studies, vaccine clinical trials and vaccine safety studies.
