Biography

Dr. Hejazi received B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in 2011. He joined the faculty of the Schulich School of Engineering at the University in 2013 after working in industry on the development of oil recovery techniques from naturally fractured heavy oil reservoirs.

Dr. Hejazi leads "Interfacial Flows and Porous Media" laboratory at the University of Calgary and his research focus includes interfacial flows, liquid-solid interactions, soft matter, and porous media science especially with applications in health, energy, and environment systems. In particular, he uses experiments, theory, and simulations in hydrodynamic instabilities, wetting and evaporation dynamics, reactive flow in porous media, microfluidics and HPHT visual micromodels, multiphase flow in reservoir rocks, enhanced oil production, liquid-cooling of electronics, and design of novel interfacial materials for 3D printing.

Areas of Research

Interfacial and multiphase flows in porous and confined systems, with applications in subsurface energy storage, enhanced resource recovery, advanced interfacial materials, and thermal management

 

  • Subsurface Energy Storage and Resource Recovery: Underground hydrogen and CO₂ storage, caprock sealing, relative permeability, reservoir integrity, and enhanced oil recovery.
  • Thermal Fluids, Geothermal Energy, and Data-Center Cooling: Design of advanced heat-transfer fluids and nanomaterial-enabled liquids for geothermal energy systems, data-center cooling, waste-heat recovery, and thermal management.
  • Advanced Interfacial Materials: Liquid-in-liquid materials, all-in-liquid 3D printing, structured liquids, and functional particle-laden interfaces.
  • Transport in Porous Media: Pore-scale multiphase displacement, reactive transport, trapping, and fluid transport in geological and engineered porous systems.
  • Interfacial and Multiphase Flows: Wetting, capillarity, droplet dynamics, evaporation, hydrodynamic instabilities, and fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interactions.
  • Interfacial Rheology, Microfluidics, and Pore-Scale Imaging: Interfacial viscoelasticity, emulsions, microfluidic platforms, and advanced imaging for visualizing and quantifying transport in confined and porous systems.
