Biography
After training in the Netherlands, Edmonton and Sweden, Dr. Vogel joined the University of Calgary in 1985 as an AHFMR Scholar. He has been a Full Professor since 1991 and has held various AHFMR and AIHS Scientist awards until 2013. Dr. Vogel is a leading biochemist who has won both junior and senior career research awards from the Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences.

Our research has been focused on a number of different proteins and peptides that play a role in infectious and inflammatory diseases or in cancer. Moreover we are actively involved in various clinical metabolomics research programs in Calgary.
Calcium-binding regulatory proteins are studied through site-directed mutagenesis, calorimetry experiments, spectroscopic studies and NMR structure determination. Together these experimental techniques provide very detailed information about protein structure, their metal ion binding sites, and they can define the interaction surfaces for target protein binding. Our work centers on the regulatory calcium binding protein calmodulin and structurally related calcium-binding proteins, such as the calcium-integrin binding proteins. At the moment we are studying various protein-protein interactions of mammalian calcium-binding proteins that play a role in the innate immune response or in cancer metastasis. Moreover calcium-regulatory proteins that play a major role in the plant stress response are also under study.
Host-defense peptides form an integral part of the innate immune response of humans and many other organisms. We are particularly interested in several tryptophan-rich antimicrobial peptides found in neutrophils or in digests of regular food proteins. Our work is aimed at elucidating the mechanism of action of various host defense peptides and proteins. Our studies rely on NMR structure determination of membrane-bound peptides, which are analyzed in combination with microcalorimetry and membrane leakage studies. Moreover we are interested in other host-defense proteins such as lysozyme, liocalin and lactoferrin. We are also studying the anticancer activities of various peptides.
Metabolomics is an emerging area of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry research, where the full complement of metabolites that is present in a specific biological compartment is determined. By quantitatively analyzing the changes that occur in the metabolite profiles in serum, urine or other biofluid samples obtained from patients, diseases such as cancer or infectious diseases, might be detected earlier or better managed. Apart from the potential clinical applications of metabolomics research it also provides a powerful tool to compare antibiotic-resistant and -sensitive microorganisms or develop improved microbiological strains for biotechnology applications. Finally, metabolomics technologies, can also be used to study the effects of exercise, diet and nutritional supplements (e.g. vitamins) on the overall health in animal models and in humans.
