Biography
Haley Hrymak is the Director of Experiential Learning at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, where she leads the Faculty’s clinical and experiential learning programs. She brings extensive experience in clinical legal education, practice-based teaching, and community-based legal services.
Hrymak’s scholarship examines how legal systems can reproduce or exacerbate inequality, with a focus on family law, family violence, and access to justice. Her broader interdisciplinary work has addressed criminal law, the opioid crisis, and health equity.
Her doctoral research at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia examines survivors’ experiences within the family law system, particularly economic abuse and the use of child support to perpetuate it. Across her research, she has conducted more than 400 interviews with survivors of family violence and legal professionals.
Prior to joining the University of Calgary, Hrymak was a lawyer with Rise Women’s Legal Centre in Vancouver, where she worked on systemic research, law reform, and legal education initiatives addressing family violence and barriers within the family justice system. Through her consulting practice, she has also provided research and education on family violence and contributed to the Department of Justice Canada’s HELP Toolkit for legal advisers.
Earlier in her career, Hrymak worked as federal Crown counsel with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Winnipeg and Vancouver.
