Biography
Short Biographical Story
My name is Gengyan Tang, and my academic journey has been shaped by a deep concern for integrity in research and education. During my master’s studies in China, I investigated predatory journals and the motivations behind authorship, which gave me first-hand exposure to the systemic challenges of misconduct. These experiences convinced me that questions of integrity cannot be reduced to individual failings—they are embedded in broader institutional and cultural contexts.
As a Ph.D. student at the University of Calgary, my current work weaves together three strands. I study how paper mills reorganize scholarly collaboration and reshape the trust networks of science. I also analyze research integrity policies, with particular attention to the global shift from punitive sanctions toward more restorative approaches that emphasize learning, dialogue, and reintegration. In parallel, I explore how minority and Indigenous cultural traditions might enrich integrity education by offering relational and community-centered perspectives that differ from dominant Western models.
Through these inquiries, I aim to reimagine integrity not only as compliance with rules, but as a shared practice sustained by cultures, policies, and communities.
