Biography

Dr. Gavin McCormack completed postdoctoral training in Population and Public Health in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary, PhD training in Public Health at the University of Western Australia, and MSc training in Sports Science at Edith Cowan University (Western Australia). He holds a faculty appointment as a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences (Cumming School of Medicine).

He leads the Built Environment and Healthy Living Lab, which conducts research examining the links between urban design and health, including physical activity, active living, diet, sedentary behaviour, weight status, injury, and cardiovascular health among adults, children, and equity‑seeking populations.

Since 2014, Dr. McCormack has been an Associate Scientific Editor for the Public Health Agency of Canada’s flagship journal Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention in Canada, and he serves on the editorial board for the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. He is also Co‑Director of Research for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Project Grant–funded CO‑PLAY Network, a five‑year national initiative supporting community‑engaged, interdisciplinary research to promote physical literacy and physical activity, and to support the physical, social, and emotional well‑being of newcomer children and youth to Canada.
