Areas of Research
My research interests are in cystic fibrosis, intestinal rehabilitation, and clinical nutrition.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited condition that commonly involves the digestive tract. I am currently interested in the effects of prokinetics in the management and prophylaxis of constipation and distal intestinal obstruction syndrome, two important issues in CF. CFTR modulators, novel therapies that improve synthesis or function of the proteins affected in CF, have a significant impact on the digestive system, and future research will assess the effects of these medications on pancreatic exocrine function and risk of pancreatitis. I am currently collaborating to develop a biobank of intestinal organoids from CF patients, which retain characteristics of the intestinal epithelium they are derived from, in order to develop organelle-specific assays assessing CFTR dysfunction that can predict disease severity and responsiveness to CFTR modulators for a given patient.
Intestinal failure is a rare condition requiring parenteral nutrition.
