Areas of Research

Variable stars

My work on variable stars has focused on two main groups, eclipsing binary stars and pulsating variables such as delta Scuti stars and Cepheid variables, with occasional studies of novae, and cataclysmic variables, and even active galactic nuclei.  The principle purpose for studying these objects has been the opportunity they provide for not only revealing the physics behind their activity, but also for providing the means to obtain fundamental stellar information such as their masses, sizes, surface temperatures, and distances.

Optical and Infrared Photometry

To obtain the highest precision in fundamental stellar quantities, the data gathering tools must deliver highly accurate and precise data. That was the raison d'etre behind the development of the Rapid Alternate Detection System at the RAO, and the Infrared Working Group infrared passbands designed to minimize the effect of water vapor absorption. Both of those projects, and much of my stellar research was conducted with telescopes at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory.
