Biography

Dr. Limacher is a specialist in aerodynamic theory and experimental fluid mechanics, with industry experience in mechanical design and clean-energy technology.

The Limacher Lab conducts research in unsteady aerodynamics and vortex dynamics, with applications to the fields of renewable energy, aerospace, and marine propulsion.  Active projects include the design of novel turbines for shallow-water applications; efforts to improve biomimetic drone technology; and investigation into the hydrodynamics of competitive rowing.  Employing a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, the group aims to develop engineering models for the design and optimization of fluid-dynamic devices.

The Limacher Lab is a member in the Laboratory for Turbulence Research in Aerodynamics and flow Control (LTRAC), which houses wind-tunnel and water-channel facilities fitted with state-of-the-art equipment for high-speed photography and six-axis force measurement.  Optical flow measurement techniques such as particle-image velocimetry (PIV) are used to generate high-resolution velocity-field data for flows of interest.
