Research
Areas of Research
My current research is related to two common issues in pediatric clinical care: acute airway management and fluid management. Acute airway management research is rare in the pediatric population as the number of acute events is much lower than the adult population. This leads to a lack of experience in acute airway management (an estimate of one endotracheal intubations every six years). My work looks at the intubation practices in Alberta with two types of healthcare workers - Pediatric Critical Care Transport teams and rural physicians. The goal is to define different practices and provide possible solutions. Fluid management in critically ill children is my second research interest. Hyperchloremia is associated with adult critically ill patients with higher incidences of acute kidney injury, higher use of continuous renal replacement therapy and mortality. The association in pediatric populations has not yet been discovered. My goal is to initially prove an association by doing retrospective and prospective studies.
