Biography
Dr. Deirdre McCaughey is an Associate Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary, Canada. Prior to taking on her role in Calgary, she was healthcare management faculty at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).
Dr McCaughey was appointed as the inaugural Program Director for UAB’s graduate programs in Healthcare Quality & Safety; building both a certificate and a Master’s degree in Healthcare Quality & Safety (HQS).
Prior to her academic career, Deirdre’s broad work experiences include being a physical therapist at the St Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, working in a variety of leadership positions in the retail private sector, and independent consulting for a variety of organizations including the Canadian Federal Government and ARAMARK Healthcare.
The overarching theme of her research investigates structural factors (e.g. systems and processes, leadership, and organizational culture) in healthcare institutions and systems that influence patient/family access and outcomes, organizational effectiveness, and healthcare provider/workforce wellness.
Her QI expertise and structure approach to healthcare challenges has led to her becoming a key member of the Family Caregivers Studies team (see projects below).
Deirdre is active internationally serving as:
* A Board Member for the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ)
* A member of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education’s (CAHME) Healthcare Quality and Safety Executive Committee.
* Chair of the Certification Review Committee, Population Health (CAHME).
* A 5-year elected Division Leadership Executive (2022-2027) in the Academy of Management’s Healthcare Management Division (HCM) as the 2024-25 President Elect.
Projects
We investigate the challenges within and across our healthcare system for family caregivers of persons living with dementia. Post-pandemic, we focus on system gaps, resource access variations, and care continuity.
