Biography

I am an interdisciplinary academic interested in characterising processes that support individual and collective environmental actions. Towards this, I engage in critical ethnographic work with various volunteer-driven organisations, civil societies and other stakeholders. As an educator, I use social design-based approaches to co-create learning environments that center ecological justice. My research weaves together diverse strands of inquiry, ranging from the evolution of values and sustainability issues, to exploring the mechanisms underlying the development of grounded knowledge and collective forms of civic action.

I am always looking for ideas and collaborations to co-design culturally inclusive and responsive spaces that facilitate learning of the interconnections between ecology and well-being through land-based pedagogies. I enjoy collecting seeds, stories and recipes. My other literary rambles can be accessed at https://linktr.ee/deborahdutta

Projects

Soch: Expanding Indian and Indian Diasporic Ways of Thinking in the Learning Sciences (A Project of the South Asian Learning Sciences Research Collective)

This project has been about talking to people working in diverse Indian contexts to understand their perspectives on educational practices, the sociopolitical realities within which they are trying to contribute, and their goals. In doing so, we seek to expand the learning sciences by deepening our understanding of knowledge practices, learning processes, and educational equity beyond western contexts. ‘There is a bee in my balcony’: A guide to growing food anywhere you live using illustrated narratives of diverse urban farms

This project explored the educational and policy dimensions of urban farming practices under the theme of  ‘Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures’ (TESF), a research network supported by the UK Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) through the Indian hub at the Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS).
