Biography

David Proud obtained both a B.Sc. with first class honours, and his Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Essex in Colchester, UK.  He received postdoctoral training at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland USA, and then joined the Faculty of the Department of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.  He moved to the University of Calgary in 2001 and serves as Chair of the Airway Inflammation Research Group and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Inflammatory Airway Diseases.  Dr. Proud has received several awards including a Fogerty International Fellowship, the Frey-Werle Foundation Award, the 2008 Lorraine Award of Excellence from the Lung Association of Alberta, the Harkness Foundation Lifetime Mentorship Award and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Proud’s research has targeted the pathogenesis of inflammatory airway diseases.  In particular, his current work focuses on the biology of the airway epithelium and on the mechanisms by which common respiratory viruses trigger acute exacerbations of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  Throughout this work he has adopted the approach of combining in vitro mechanistic studies using human cell systems with in vivo studies in patients and volunteers.  Dr. Proud has served on several grant review panels for the US National Institutes of Health. Since moving to Canada, he served on the Respiratory System Grant Review panel for the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and Chaired the National Grant Review Panel of the Canadian Lung Association. he served on the Advisory Board of the IRCH of CIHR.  He reviews manuscripts for approximately 20 journals.
