Dr. Johnson's primary research interests focus on the management of common respiratory illnesses (croup, bronchiolitis, and asthma), and has published several large multi-centre randomized controlled trials assessing the benefit of corticosteroids for both croup and bronchiolitis in the New England Journal of Medicine. A related research interest is in determining how best to translate knowledge into practice. He has completed several large multi-centre studies assessing different strategies for implementing clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways in Alberta. Through this experience, he has become a Co-investigator and Lead of a Canada-wide research network of clinicians and research methodologists focused on knowledge translation (KT), the Calgary node of KT Canada. Dr. Johnson has also published widely on the management of several common poisonings (such as acetaminophen and salicylate) and other common pediatric emergency medicine topics (such as gastroenteritis and head injury).
